Maßgeschneiderte Fahrzeuge: Drenthe setzt auf den AT

From classical tank firefighting vehicle to special equipment for forest and field fires: In the province of Drenthe in the north-east of the Netherlands, last year a total of seven vehicles from Rosenbauer's AT series were put into service – each customized for their respective usage area.

 

The province of Drenthe has around 500,000 residents, where 36 fire departments are responsible for firefighting and technical operations, among other things. Since last year, some of the 700 voluntary and 50 professional firefighters have tackled these operations with the new AT from Rosenbauer. A total of seven vehicles were delivered and have significantly increased the effectiveness of the "Brandweer Drenthe," thanks to their high-tech equipment.

Special Dutch features

Naturally, the vehicles have been adapted to the standards in the Netherlands. Not just that the country's typical blue-white stripe pattern is present on the front and rear, also the special orange signal (in addition to blue light) and the searchlight on the driver's cab roof are typical for Dutch firefighting vehicles.

 

As regards extinguishing, increasingly high pressure is being used in the Netherlands. The main reasons for this are less extinguishing water damage, lower water consumption, and efficient extinguishing. That is why the new ATs are equipped with combined built-in pumps, which deliver up to 250 l/min at 40 bar. In the compartments there are two 100 meter long HP rapid intervention hose reels, which ensure that extinguishing can start right after arriving at the scene of the emergency.

Few hydrants – many suction hoses

The Netherlands are famous for its dikes, rivers, and canals. These are also used for supply water. For larger operations, water is brought to the operational scene via excessively long and large suction hoses. Due to the fact that no drinking water can be used as fire fighting water in the Netherlands, hydrants are being used less and less. Instead, large tankers are used when the water cannot be supplied via lines.

 

The long suction hoses are also transported on the roof of the vehicles, just like the lines. Instead of having to climb on the roof to load and unload, with the new ATs in Drenthe all it takes is the press of a button: then the entire roof box is automatically lowered on the rear and the equipment can be easily removed.

Additional equipment for special operations

Nearly every fire-fighting truck in the Netherlands also has minimum equipment for rescue operations on board, along with the standard extinguishing equipment. This includes hydraulic rescue equipment. Some of the new ATs for the province of Drenthe have been equipped for very special operations, though.

 

The AT for the Westerbork Fire Department has even been equipped with a self-protection nozzle system and a water line via the crew cab. The reason: The vehicle is used for field and forest fire operations. The self-protection nozzle system on the front ensures that the vehicle and the crew are protected when driving over burning terrain. With a water line on the roof, an attachable turret can be supplied and operated from the driver's cab to extinguish field fires.

 

State-of-the-art firefighting technology, simple operation, and customized adaptation to the respective requirements make the AT a powerful fire-fighting vehicle of vital importance. Like so many others, the fire departments of the Dutch region of Drenthe also value and trust the classic municipal fire fighting vehicles from Rosenbauer.
