Fire fighting and rescue at the same time
It is multi-talented with a compact design. Suitable for fire fighting and for rescue. What we are talking about is the L20-FA (First Attack) aerial ladder.
Operation in Australia
The first delivered L20-FA is in operation in the metropolis of Adelaide. The capital of the state of South Australia was rated as the city with the best quality of life in Australia. Almost 1.2 million people live across a total area of 870 km² in the metropolitan region of Adelaide. In its annual "Best in Travel" issue, the Lonely Planet travel guide chose the south Australian city of Adelaide as among the Top Ten cities worldwide to visit in 2014.
The fire department's tasks are undertaken by SAMFS (South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service), the professional firefighters in South Australia. More than 1,000 people are employed in 36 locations, split into 20 stations in urban areas and 16 stations in the surrounding regions.
The challenge
The difficult requirement profile for the desired vehicle: a maneuverable and compact aerial ladder vehicle, but one which is still optimally equipped for fire fighting. Hence the L20-FA fulfills the functions that normally have to be divided between multiple vehicles.
Smallest fully automated hydraulic aerial ladder in the world
The new L20-FA is a combination of aerial ladder and fire fighting vehicle. This allows for effective fire fighting and for rescuing people with just one vehicle.
All of which is possible thanks to the sophisticated concept of the L20-FA. It is equipped with a four-part ladder which can be extended to a working height of 21 m. The deployment time is well under a minute thanks to high-performance hydraulics. This means the aerial ladder is ready for operation in no time.
The work cage has a load capacity of 450 kg (4 people), has four openings and a folding ladder for additional access assistance on uneven ground or for climbing onto a balcony. Of course the aerial ladder's load is monitored electronically.
Effective fire fighting with First Attack vehicles
What's special about the First Attack models is the equipment. An NH55 firefighting pump, an 1,800 l water and a 200 l foam tank as well as an RM15 electrical turret, which is mounted on the work cage, make the L20-FA an effective fire fighting vehicle for a first attack. There is also space for the crew (1+4) in the driver's cab in the L20-FA delivered to the fire department in Adelaide.
The turret on the cage is supplied directly from the rear pump by a fixed built-in TWS line (telescopic waterway), and the ladder is also equipped with a power supply. The aerial ladder for Adelaide's fire department is built on a 3-axle chassis from Scania. There is space in the eight equipment compartments for two rapid intervention hose reels each with a 90 m hose, SCBA holders and all the equipment for fire fighting.
Compact design
The very compact design is especially advantageous in tight spaces: the turret, ladder frame and rescue cage are arranged so that no part is outside the contours of the vehicle when setting up the ladder. The vehicle is jacked via a hydraulic vertical jacking system contained within the vehicle contours. This allows operations in narrow alleys or where space is tight.
The vehicle is built in accordance with Australian standards and complies with the so-called ADR rules (Australian Design Rules).
CAN-Bus system
The L20-FA for Adelaide is the first small aerial ladder with CAN-Bus system and a fully automated control system. The proven CAN-Bus control system as well as clearly organized symbols and clearly arranged display instruments guarantee the operator the highest degree of safety and simplest operation in stressful situations.
Monitoring and maintenance via service4fire
The L20-FA Adelaide is equipped with service4fire. This allows remote monitoring and maintenance of the vehicle as well. Information about vehicle position, operation and condition is evaluated and can be accessed online. Messages and reports provide an overview of the operational readiness of the vehicle at any time.
