4th generation PANTHER at Dresden Airport

The Dresden Airport fire department put their latest Rosenbauer ARFF vehicle into service at the beginning of March this year. The PANTHER 8x8 represents the 4th generation of Rosenbauer airfield fire engines (ARFF vehicles), which have reliably served at Dresden Airport since 1993.

Dresden International Airport in Saxony, like Leipzig/Halle Airport, is owned by Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG. In 2019, Dresden Airport processed around 1.6 million passengers and over 28,000 take-offs and landings.

The first Rosenbauer PANTHER was delivered to the 65-man airport fire brigade back in 1993. And now, 27 years later, the fourth generation of the PANTHER (and their fourth vehicle) has been put into operation. Prior to this, the second-generation PANTHER number 2 (2007) and third-generation PANTHER number 3 (2011) had entered service to perform comprehensive aircraft firefighting duties. At the time of their commissioning, each of these ARFFs conformed to the most modern technical standards in the world. The second generation vehicle was even a true "European first."
The chassis of the "newcomer" is a Rosenbauer 52.1450 8x8 SWB. The two EURO VI Volvo engines, each with 533 kW or 725 hp/1,066 kW or 1,500 hp, accelerate the ARFF's 44 tons from 0 to 80 km/h in 20 seconds. This is also facilitated by two Allison 7-speed automatic transmissions. The maximum speed is 140 km/h. This means that any location across the airfield can be reached within three minutes.

For extensive aircraft firefighting operations, the PANTHER 8x8 is equipped with a 12,500-liter water tank, 2x 750-liter foaming agent tanks with a Foamatic E foam admixing system, and a powder extinguishing system with 500 kg of dry powder. The pump, a Rosenbauer N110, has a capacity of up to 10,000 liters per minute at 10 bar. The extinguishing agents are applied via a Rosenbauer RM80 roof monitor with an output of 6,000 l/min at 14 bar (throw range of up to 85 m) or via the RM15C bumper monitor. A bumper-mounted thermal imaging camera supports the operator in targeted firefighting. A Rosenbauer Flexilight light mast installed in the rear illuminates the surroundings when required with its movable 8x LED spotlights (53 W / 4,000 lm each), providing daylight conditions.

The vehicle is 12 m long, 3 m wide, and 3.70 m in height. The new PANTHER, like its predecessors, is painted in ruby red as per the standard design of Dresden Airport.

One more thing that must also be mentioned in regard to the tradition of ARFFs at Dresden: Friedrich Felber came to Rosenbauer in the early 1990s, and helped to produce the first PANTHER for Dresden Airport. He once again helped out with the production of the fourth Dresden PANTHER, before finally retiring after its delivery.

Dresden Airport and its fire brigade will continue to operate Rosenbauer's state-of-the-art technology for fire protection. At the beginning of this year, an order for the delivery of an HLF 20 auxiliary extinguishing group vehicle on a MAN TGM 15.290 4x4 BB chassis was placed. This was followed in March by an order for the delivery of an L32A-XS turntable ladder with articulated arm and five-part ladder set and a new 500 kg multifunctional basket on a Mercedes Benz 1630 4x2 Atego chassis. Both vehicles are scheduled to be delivered this year.
