Unprecedented

Unique logistics vehicle for Reichenau volunteer fire department

Challenges are a matter of routine for fire truck manufacturers. But the list of requirements of the volunteer fire department from the Austrian town of Reichenau can still be viewed as an out-of-the-ordinary task - just like the new standard of the state of Upper Austria.

Increased flexibility thanks to a new standard

It all began with a new standard. Namely that of the regional fire department command (LFK) for Upper Austria, Rosenbauer's home state. The LFK specified a new standard for large logistics vehicles (OÖLFV RL FA-15/1), which, among other things, brings with it new requirements in terms of dimensions and payload. The purpose of this standard is to allow a more flexible application of new acquisitions. The new specifications therefore mean that different operational scenarios, for instance different natural disasters, are covered by a single vehicle type.

The first customer: Reichenau volunteer fire department

The first tender in accordance with the new regulation was drawn up by the Reichenau volunteer fire department in Upper Austria's Mühlviertel. "Since the standard is new, there has never been a tender like this before," commented Roland Mayerhofer from Rosenbauer's sales department.

An all-wheel drive fire engine was needed in Reichenau - or an LFA-L (which stands for 'fire engine with all-wheel drive' with the extension 'logistics') in fire department language. This is designed purely for the transportation of equipment. The equipment requirements were defined, as was the choice of chassis: the vehicle was to be built on a MAN TGM 14.290 with all-wheel drive, according to the tender.

Short response time thanks to the modular design

When the order was finally awarded to Rosenbauer, a special vehicle comparable in construction with the series models could be built in consultation with the customer in a very short time, despite the unprecedented dimensions. This has been made possible thanks to the modular construction principle. This allows variable design of the height and length and facilitates the integration of standardized superstructure components. The logistics vehicle for FF Reichenau is therefore a one-off - but its manufacturing quality corresponds to that of a production line vehicle, without any limitations.

Manufacturer and customer are well prepared

This means that Rosenbauer is already excellently positioned for the orders of tomorrow. Even if other countries and regions define their own standards: "We are prepared for this," says Johannes Kirchner, Head of Vehicle Technology at Rosenbauer's Neidling site. "In addition, the concept can be implemented on different chassis from different manufacturers, and even with different wheelbases."

Reichenau's volunteer fire department is now also well equipped: The body of the LFA-L has two deep compartments with hinged steps that connect directly to the crew cab, as well as a large equipment compartment in the rear. Also on board are the power generator, illumination, and digging tool, as well as the newly purchased FOX4 portable pump and all water supply fittings and hose material. Using a hydraulic tail lift, up to six rolling containers with the same dimensions as a Euro pallet can be loaded into the rear equipment compartment. They are equipped with payloads for a variety of tasks, guaranteeing flexible use of the vehicle. In the event of a disaster, the equipment compartment can also be used to transport material to the operation site.

Space for nine people, thanks to proCAB

The vehicle's crew cab is also worth mentioning. In the large logistics vehicle, the Rosenbauer proCAB was built in a high-end version, i.e., with the tried-and-tested rotating staircase from the AT installed. It offers space for seven people (meaning that a total of nine emergency personnel can be transported to the site) as well as all of the equipment required for the crew's respiratory protection.
