3 HLF for the Hanover Fire Department

Hanover - trade fair city and hub for fire services

Hanover is the capital of Lower Saxony and the hub for servicing a population of 1.2 million people in its wider metropolitan area. Hanover is also home to the world's largest exhibition center, which covers 131 hectares. This is where Interschutz - the world's leading trade fair for fire services - will take place from June 15 to 20, 2020. Rainer Kunze from the Hanover fire department explains the connection between the trade fair and fire services, and gives more information on how three new vehicles from Rosenbauer are deployed.

The Hanover fire department and its tasks

In the state capital, more than 800 fire service professionals and 730 volunteer firefighters are responsible for delivering fire protection, assistance, emergency services and disaster relief. They are divvied up into six fire and rescue stations and 17 local fire departments.

The fire department's tasks also includes the organization and operation of the Hanover regional control center. This center handles all emergency calls for rescue situations, ambulance services, and fire protection and assistance for Hanover and its metropolitan area, which together encompass a total of 1.2 million residents. It is one of the largest integrated control centers in Germany, and coordinates almost 230,000 operations per year.

"Hanover's fire department has performed between 65,000 and 70,000 deployments in each of the past five years," reports Rainer Kunze. "In 2018, the fire and rescue services had to be deployed a total of 69,085 times." Of these deployments, over 3,000 were for fires, and almost 5,000 were rescue missions.

The fleet in Hanover

The fleet of Hanover's fire department consists of a total of 328 vehicles, roll-off containers, and trailers. It include 66 fire engines, 15 aerial rescue vehicles, and 34 emergency rescue vehicles. Numerous rescue, crane, and equipment vehicles as well as special vehicles are specially configured and equipped for specific operational requirements. "21 of these vehicles are from Rosenbauer. This includes 15 fire trucks, four aerial rescue vehicles, and two rescue vehicles," says Kunze.

For deployments related to fire protection, technical assistance, and disaster protection, the Hanover fire department has received three new auxiliary firefighting vehicles on MAN chassis, each with a total weight of 16 tons, water tank volume of 2,000 liters and an N25 pump system. They will replace older vehicles used by the local volunteer fire departments and thus consolidate or expand their range of applications. "With the new technology, we are able to continue to implement the long-term equipment concept for the local fire departments, and ensure the consistent performance expected of a modern city fire department in the state capital," explains Kunze regarding the purchase.

New tasks: supporting the trade fair fire service

In April 2019, the Hanover fire department additionally took over the operational tasks of the Deutsche Messe AG fire department. The world's largest exhibition center had operated its own part-time fire department since 1954. "It was constantly faced by considerable recruitment problems," says Rainer Kunze. The cooperation with Hanover's fire department now ensures around-the-clock fire protection and assistance from the new Fire and Rescue Station 3 or, when large trade fairs are hosted, directly from the exhibition center. Deutsche Messe AG continues to provide all preventive measures through management by the plant fire department.

What does Interschutz entail?

In the run-up to Interschutz, employees of the Hanover fire department support the organizers, the Association for the Promotion of German Fire Protection, in organizing and implementing the trade fair, which will take place once again in 2020. In addition, the German Rescue-from-Heights Championship is organized, and on-site logistical assistance is given to presenters. "We are also presenting ourselves in Hall 12 at our own exhibition stand, with interesting content arranged along the lines of the trade fair theme, 'Teams, Tactics, Technology," says Rainer Kunze, who is looking forward to a large number of trade fair visitors from both abroad and closer to home. And to round things off: During the fair, Messewache Nord will be manned by members of the Hanover fire department.
